Your Children’s Ministry From Scratch, written by Trisha R. Peach, is a practical “how-to” guide for new children’s ministry leaders. In this book, Trisha touches on many of the questions and struggles people face when they are given the reigns of leading their church’s children’s ministry. Each chapter focuses on a different aspect of children’s ministry, which I can say from experience, all children’s ministers will deal with in their first few months of leadership.

As a veteran children’s ministry leader, Trisha is a trusted source of knowledge when it comes to any topic in ministry to children. She explains each chapter beautifully, by using case studies, storytelling, and easy-to-follow lists. While reading this book, you will find information on:

  • Getting started in children’s ministry
  • Developing a ministry vision
  • Creating a budget
  • Choosing curriculum
  • Recruiting volunteers

Here’s a picture of the book’s table of contents, so you can get a better sense of what’s included:

The Pros:

  • Contains a wide variety of children’s ministry information.
  • Written in language that’s easy to understand.
  • Has wide-margins (good for writing and making notes).
  • Written by a trusted source in children’s ministry.
  • Interactive (has thought-provoking questions and space for you to write your own thoughts/answers).
  • E-book version available.

The Cons:

I’ll admit, I had to really think hard to come up with any cons for this book. But, as a believer that no book is perfect, aside from Scripture, here’s what I came up with:

  • No hardback edition.
  • Contains some information that will become outdated (may eventually need to be revised).

The Takeaway:

After reading Your Children’s Ministry From Scratch, I can definitely see why other children’s ministry leaders, such as Brian Dollar, Dale Hudson, and Dick Gruber, have given it such high regards. This is a book children’s ministry leaders will find themselves referring to time and again. It is both practical and necessary for all children’s ministry leaders (both new and veteran) to understand what Trisha Peach explains so clearly. Your Children’s Ministry From Scratch should be on every children’s ministry leader’s desk or shelf.
